There's not much good in being able to look at stuff more freely if the textures are terrible, so bad that you can barely understand what you are looking at. But it's not enough to save the game since everything else is woeful. The neat thing here is that you can look around in all directions within these locations, and while it's not as nice as simply having a fully free form movement, it does make things a little nicer to explore. You play from a point and click, first person perspective, jumping between predefined locations within an area, similar to a game like Myst. While I followed some guides to get this to run, I wouldn't recommend bothering as there is still potential crashing issues (my game crashed after completing level 2, forcing a full replay of level 2 as my previous save was the beginning). Of note, is that while this game is free on Steam, and possibly easily obtainable in other places, there are issues getting it to run easily on modern PCs, in particular with the mouse. I'm struggling to rate this game as "a game" vs "a 2002 PC game in 2022". I don't believe there are any fail states (other than crashing.), but I could be wrong. The puzzles themselves don't feel obtuse, often being more about finding the object rather than some other puzzle solving games from then and earlier that required crazy thinking to solve. The game could have better used subtitles in some places, a common problem for games of the era. The engine plays relatively smooth, though I would have liked transitional movement between locations as it is disorienting to jump around. As a game, looking at the contemporaries, it doesn't really stand out but is an impressive first outting for Frogwares. 50% PCThis is the first of the Sherlock Holmes games by Frogwares, a simple point & click puzzle solving game in first person, solving a mystery in a single large mansion.
